Most of the work happens before you book. A shop's website will tell you almost everything, if you know what you're reading — and one phone call will tell you the rest.
Here's how to find out whether a bridal shop is actually built for you, before you're standing in a fitting room finding out the hard way.
Ask about sample sizes, not availability
This is the question that matters, and it is not the one most shops expect.
Nearly every boutique can order a gown in your size. That is a manufacturer function, not a service. What you want to know is what's hanging on their floor right now — the samples you'll actually put on your body during the appointment. A shop with a floor that stops at a size 12 will happily order you a 22. You'll just spend your appointment holding fabric against yourself in a mirror while everyone tells you to imagine it.
So the question is: what size range do your samples run, and how many gowns do you have above a size 18?
The number matters less than how quickly they answer it. A shop that has thought about this will tell you immediately. A shop that hasn't will get vague.
Look at who's in their photos
Scroll their Instagram. Not the styled shoots — the real brides, the ones tagged in the fitting room and on their wedding day.
If every body in the grid is the same body, that tells you who they photograph, which tells you who they serve. If you see a range of brides and none of them are being framed as a special accommodation, that tells you something too.
Read the reviews written by brides like you
Filter for the ones that mention size, fit, or feeling comfortable. Those reviews are unusually honest, because a bride who had a bad appointment about her body remembers it precisely and writes it down.
Look for the specific detail rather than the star rating. "They made me feel beautiful" is nice. "She had six gowns pulled in my size before I got there" is information.
What it should feel like in the room
A genuinely size-inclusive appointment doesn't announce itself. Nobody makes a point of how accommodating they're being. The gowns are simply there, in your size, pulled ahead of time based on the conversation you had when you booked.
Your stylist should be talking about silhouette, venue, and what you like — the same conversation every bride gets. Not about what's flattering. Not about what will "work for your shape." Those phrases are almost always doing quiet work you didn't ask for.
And you should never be handed the two options that fit and told those are your choices.
The tell that isn't on any website
Ask how they handle it when a bride can't get into a sample. Every shop has this happen occasionally, even a well-stocked one.
The answer you want is procedural and unbothered — they clip, they use a stretch panel, they pull something else, they move on. The answer you don't want is apologetic. Apology means it's being treated as a problem, and if it's a problem for them, it'll be a problem for you all afternoon.
