You've booked the appointment. Now you're standing in front of your closet the night before, and somehow this feels like a harder decision than it should.
Here's the good news: nothing you wear will change how a gown looks on you. But a few small choices will make the morning smoother and the mirror more honest — and that's worth thinking about for ten minutes, not ten days.
Wear underthings you'd actually wear again
This is the one that matters most, and it's the one most brides skip.
A gown reads differently over a bra that fits than over one that doesn't. If you already own a strapless or a longline you like, wear it. If you don't own one and you're not sure what you'd wear under a wedding dress, that's completely normal — come as you are and say so out loud at the start. Your stylist has had that conversation a thousand times and would much rather have it early than watch you fidget in front of a mirror.
Seamless underwear is the other easy win. Nothing derails a fitted silhouette faster than a visible line you spend the whole try-on staring at instead of looking at the dress.
Make getting in and out easy
You will change many times in a short window. A dress or a skirt and top slips off faster than skinny jeans and knee-high boots, and the difference adds up.
Slip-on shoes for the same reason. And if you have a heel height in mind for the wedding, bring a pair close to it — hem length is one of the few things you genuinely can't judge without them.
Keep your face and hair simple
Wear makeup if it makes you feel like yourself. Just go lighter than usual, and skip anything that transfers. Gowns come over your head, and the last thing you want is to be the reason a sample needs cleaning — or to be worrying about it while you're trying to feel something.
Hair up and out of the way helps you see necklines clearly. A low ponytail or a clip is plenty.
Bring what helps you decide, and leave the rest
If you have a photo of your venue, a hairpiece from your mother, or the earrings you already know you're wearing, bring them. Physical things beat descriptions.
What you don't need is a binder of screenshots. Bring two or three images that capture a feeling, and then be willing to be surprised. Nearly every bride we work with tries on something outside her plan, and a good number of them go home with it.
And bring people who are on your side
You know who they are. Sizes are printed inside sample gowns, and they don't correspond to what you wear anywhere else in your life — that's true across the bridal industry and it isn't a comment on you. The person standing next to you should be someone who already understands that, or who will take your word for it.
