Why sample sizes matter so much
Most bridal boutiques carry samples: one version of each gown that brides try on before ordering their own. At many shops, those samples only come in a narrow range of smaller sizes. If you wear a larger size, that can mean clips, open zippers and a lot of imagining.
It's hard to fall in love with a dress you can't actually put on. When a sample fits you, you see the real neckline, the real waist, and the way the skirt actually moves. You're deciding based on what's in the mirror, not a guess.
At Belle Femme Bridal, our samples run from size 4 to 28, so most brides can try gowns on the way they're meant to be worn.
Questions to ask before you book
A quick call or email before you schedule anything can save you a disappointing afternoon. Ask:
- What size range do your samples come in?
- How many gowns do you carry in my size?
- Do you carry designers who make extended sizes?
- Will my stylist pull gowns for me before I arrive?
A boutique that serves curvy brides well will answer these easily.
Look for designers who design for your body
Some designers treat plus sizes as an afterthought, with the same pattern simply scaled up. Others design with curves in mind from the start, building in the structure, support and proportions fuller figures need.

What a good fit should feel like
A wedding dress should let you breathe, sit, hug and dance. When you try something on, check that:
- the bodice supports you without digging in
- you can raise your arms comfortably
- the waistline sits at your natural waist
- you still feel like yourself, just more dressed up
If something feels off, say so. A good stylist would rather hear it and pull something different than watch you settle.
Is it worth the drive?
Brides come to our Richardson boutique from all over DFW, including Plano, Garland, Rockwall, McKinney and Dallas, and some come from much farther. The reason is simple. One appointment where you can try gown after gown in your size is worth more than several where you can barely try any.
