Your bridal appointment goes by fast. Between trying on gowns and taking in everyone's reactions, it's easy to forget the practical questions until you're back in the car.

Here's a list to keep on your phone so you leave with everything you need.

Before You Start Trying On

  • What styles would you suggest for my venue and season? Your stylist sees hundreds of brides. She can point you toward options you might not have pictured.
  • Can I try on styles outside my comfort zone? You're allowed to. Many brides fall for something they almost skipped.
  • What sizes are your samples? Sample gowns are made in specific sizes. Knowing this ahead of time helps your stylist plan how to show you each gown.

When You Find One You Love

  • What's the designer and style name? Write it down or snap a photo of the tag.
  • What fabrics and colors does it come in? Many gowns come in more than one shade of ivory or white, and some have lining options too.
  • Can anything be customized? Some designers allow changes like adding sleeves, adjusting a neckline, or swapping a skirt.
  • How will it feel on a long day? Ask about weight, structure, and how easy it is to sit, walk, and dance.

About Timing and Ordering

  • How long does it take to arrive once ordered? This varies a lot by designer, so ask about the specific gown.
  • When should I order to stay on schedule? Work backward from your wedding date with your stylist. For a general timeline, see How Far in Advance Should You Buy Your Wedding Dress?
  • Is there an off-the-rack option? If your date is close, buying a gown same-day can take the stress out of waiting. Learn more about how off-the-rack works.

About Alterations

  • What alterations will this gown likely need? Your stylist can often tell you on the spot.
  • When should my first fitting be? Alterations take time, so plan for it.
  • Will lace, beading, or a train make alterations more involved? Detailed gowns sometimes need extra care.

About the Purchase

  • What's included in the price? Ask what's covered and what's extra, like a bustle or a garment bag.
  • What are the payment and deposit terms?
  • What happens if my measurements change before the wedding?

One More Question to Ask Yourself

How do I feel in this? Not how it looks on the hanger, and not what everyone else thinks. How you feel. That answer matters most. If you're unsure, here are a few signs you've found your wedding dress.
