You said yes to the dress. Now comes the part that makes it truly yours: alterations.

Almost every wedding gown needs some adjusting. That's normal, and it's not a sign anything is wrong. Gowns are made in standard sizes, and you are not a standard size. Nobody is.

Here's a simple timeline so alterations feel calm instead of rushed.

What Alterations Usually Involve

Common changes include:

  • Hemming so you can walk without tripping
  • Taking in or letting out the bodice or side seams
  • Adjusting straps or sleeves for comfort and support
  • Adding a bustle so you can lift your train for the reception
  • Adding cups or support inside the bodice

Gowns with lace, beading, or layered skirts may need extra time and care.

A General Alterations Timeline

Every gown and every seamstress is a little different, but this is a good starting point.

About 2 to 3 months before your wedding: first fitting. This is where most of the work is planned and started. Bring your wedding shoes and the undergarments you plan to wear.

About 4 to 6 weeks before: second fitting. Your seamstress checks the changes and fine-tunes the fit.

About 1 to 2 weeks before: final fitting. Everything should feel right. This is also a great time to bring whoever will help you get dressed so they can learn the bustle.

Some brides need just one or two fittings. Others need three or more. Detailed gowns or big changes may need extra time, so ask early.

Tips for Smooth Fittings

Bring your shoes every time. Your hem depends on your heel height.

Wear the right undergarments. They change how the gown fits.

Move around. Sit, walk, raise your arms, and do a little dance. Your gown should work for your whole day, not just standing still.

Speak up. If something pinches or feels off, say so. Small changes are easier early on.

Try not to stress about your measurements. Bodies change a little over a few months, and that's okay. That's exactly why the final fitting happens close to your date.

Planning Backward From Your Date

Alterations are the last step in a longer timeline. If you haven't found your gown yet, it helps to know how much time ordering takes too. Here's our guide to how far in advance to buy your wedding dress.

Short on time? An off-the-rack gown can give you more breathing room for fittings.
